What are the challenges that confront science education and how might they be addressed? In this presentation, I will outline why learning science is difficult and demanding. Nevertheless, societies increasingly want more than the acquisition of knowledge and understanding – particularly in a context where evaluating scientific expertise is ever more important. In this talk drawing on my work for the US curriculum and OECD PISA program, I will outline what those demands are and how they might be met.
