Learners of all ages possess a wide range of experiences, information, and existing conceptions that they use to make sense of ideas they encounter in the classroom. Surfacing these ideas and understanding where they come from informs responsive teaching. We will examine questions and techniques that activate students' initial thinking, support all students in representing their thinking publicly, and provide insight into their reasoning.
