Helen Gourlay is a Development Lead for Teach First, supporting trainee teachers and NQTs, typically in schools serving pupils with low-SES backgrounds. Before working in initial teacher education, Helen was a successful and innovative science teacher. She taught science across the secondary age range for 17 years in comprehensive schools in London and Hertfordshire. This experience included working as a Team Leader for Science in two schools. Prior to working for Teach First, Helen was a lecturer at King’s College London and the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Brunel University London, where her responsibilities included leading a secondary PGCE programme, as well as the science education programme, and coordinating School Direct and Teach First. She recently completed her EdD at UEA, where she specialised in science teacher development.
