Panel Debate: European science education post-Covid19 – impact and actions (additional panellists may be confirmed) LIVE RECORD
This session is chaired by Hannah Russell ASE CEO. Additional countries have been invited and will be added accordingly.

European Science Associations come together to debate the impact and actions upon science education that have been experienced in 2020. The panel will discuss how science education has adapted to the global pandemic from a European perspective and, after introductions, each country representative will make an opening statement as to how their country has managed the impact of the pandemic and adapted.
.
Common strands/differences will be identified and prompt questions for debate. The audience will be encouraged to share their views via the Zoom CHAT function. It is hoped that the shared experiences may help everyone identify any novel or different ways in which people have adapted, that can be taken forward into 2021.

Learning from others – how can you compare one science curriculum with another?
Science is complex, and so science curricula around the world are diverse. On a practical level, how would you work out if one curriculum has strengths or weaknesses when compared with another – whether in terms of coverage, structure, expectations or in other ways? This session reflects on the problem, and presents some of the issues and solutions in actually doing it, and some of the similarities and differences in international science curricula revealed in the process.

Saving the world one science lesson at a time
We will share a framework underpinned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals to ensure the primary science curriculum is fit for global citizens of the future. The framework will share core knowledge, resources with a global perspective, enquiry based activities which provide knowledge to inform and solve global issues. The aim is to use SDGs as a vehicle to empower children (and teachers) as agents of change in their science education.

International Day Presidential Plenary: Trust in science (LIVE RECORD)
The Covid pandemic has put science under stress as never before. Science has come to the rescue, but policymakers’ use of scientific evidence has also been challenged. In this short plenary I will ask what is the role of science education in preparing the public for a better informed debate, and I will ask whether we should be doing more in science teaching to emphasise the inherent uncertainty of scientific evidence. Few parts of the world have been untouched by the pandemic, and these are questions for science educators everywhere to discuss.

This session will be followed by the presentation of the CASTME awards

Frontier Science: Vaccine Development in a Pandemic (LIVE RECORD)
Professor Andrew J Pollard is the chief investigator of the global clinical trials of the Oxford COVID19 vaccine sponsored by the University of Oxford. He has been Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group in the Department of Paediatrics at the University since 2001 and leads the paediatric infectious disease clinical team at Oxford Children’s Hospital. His research involves the design, development, clinical testing and laboratory evaluation of vaccines with the aim of improving preventing serious infectious disease and improving child health.
We welcome Professor Pollard, who leads the team that designed and developed the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and recently reported a pooled analysis of Phase 3 trials of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 across two different dose regimens, resulting in an average efficacy of 70.4%. He will talk about the science and the story behind the vaccine development and what this means in terms of overcoming the COVID-19 virus and bringing us out of the pandemic. He intends to speak for 30-40 minutes and give lots of opportunity for questions about this important collaborative science project.

Teaching has changed dramatically in the last year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adapting resources and teaching to provide appropriate science learning at home, changing classroom environments to allow ‘safe’ interactions between learners and with teachers and finding innovative ways of engaging with science practical work have raised many challenges. This session hears a range of ways these challenges have been addressed by primary and secondary teachers and will open the discussion to share and exchange ideas with the audience.

CLEAPSS: Managing practical primary science in the new normal
Implementing COVID-19 safety measures is now an integral part of any practical science lesson. Risk assessing hands on activities is something teachers have always done. Although COVID means there’s now an added step, essentially the process remains the same. During this session CLEAPSS Primary will explain what ‘doing a risk assessment’ really means and talk about the common misconceptions people generally have about the process. We’ll then explain how CLEAPSS helps staff make this process simple and efficient but most importantly, effective. The sessions will finish with examples of how to make the most of the equipment you have available and by talking through our COVID-19 model risk assessment for practical activities – ‘Practical activities in a bubble’.

Does your classroom help children learn?
The classroom environment affects student performance. Discover the environmental factors influencing learning in your classroom, find out how to monitor and control them to improve outcomes. Explore scientific enquiries to engage your students and facilitate greater awareness and ownership of their learning environment. Make simple changes to improve student’s performance.

Ground-breaking research by Professor Stephen Heppell and his team is shining a light on the impact of environmental factors on student performance. These factors are often over looked when attempts are made to improve outcomes for students. We will explore seven factors that influence learning and provide simple remedies for your learning spaces that can be implemented immediately, including innovative classroom greening approaches.

This research is particularly important in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, where factors such as airflow, temperature and humidity all play a part in disease transmission, and more generally under every school’s responsibility to provide a safe and effective learning environment.
Curriculum-based practical science enquiries and activities that can be carried out by pupils in the classroom will be shared.

Working with enquiry activities to encourage creative thinking
Children bring to school ideas formed about the world through their actions, observations and thinking in their daily lives. At the same time, we need to ensure that children develop a wide range of skills and also foster their confidence and capabilities to apply these skills in novel contexts. Enquiry provides the vehicle for this by tapping into the creative imagination of learners and channelling their curiosity in learning about science. This session by Chris Harrison and Sally Howard focuses on vignettes of practice from the EU SAILs project and from the new Science Ninja Project with CLEAPSS/King’s College London. Suitable for KS1/2/3.

A great move for the Great Science Share for Schools
A whirlwind turn around saw the @GreatSciShare 2020 become even greater for 2020! Adapting to lockdown saw registrations from children in areas of social disadvantage really flourish. A new strategy engaged parents and teachers in on-line sharing across theme weeks, live lessons, #AskAQuestion and brand new Question Makers. Come and hear what we learnt and how it’ll be even greater for 2021.
